Women fall short against Crusaders

NAMPA, Idaho (Jan. 8) - Kamie Jo Massey and Tanya Nizich combined for 43 points, but the UAA women's basketball team's comeback fell short Thursday night in a 75-65 loss to host Northwest Nazarene at Montgomery Fieldhouse.

The Seawolves (5-7, 0-3 GNAC) lost their fifth straight game despite shooting 46 percent. Northwest Nazarene (4-6, 1-2) was led by 16 points and 12 assists from Heidi Buehler, taking control of the game with a 41-30 rebounding advantage.

UAA came out of the locker room strong after trailing 41-26 at the break. The Seawolves cut their deficit to 53-49 on a Nizich three-pointer with 9:54 to play, but the Crusaders answered with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Nizich scored 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting (4-10 3FG) and pulled down four rebounds. The senior guard did not commit a single turnover in 40 minutes either. Massey was her usual solid self with 23 points (9-19 FG, 4-4 FT), seven rebounds and four assists. She and Amber Nasby also did not get a rest all night.

Senior forward Mindy Mendenhall was the only other consistent scorer, finishing with 14 points, hitting all five of her shots and all four of her free throws. Point guard Jessica Reilly played perhaps the best game of her career, dishing a career-best nine assists against just three turnovers in 32 minutes.

The Seawolves will try to stop their skid at Saint Martin's, Saturday night in Lacey, Wash.
