Volleyball suffers another loss

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 16) - Jenny Mitchell's outstanding performance went for naught Saturday night as the UAA volleyball team dropped a 23-30, 30-21, 30-23, 30-26 Great Northwest Athletic Conference decision to Northwest Nazarene at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Mitchell had 17 kills, zero hitting errors and 16 digs for UAA (9-10, 3-8 GNAC), but the Seawolves still lost their fifth straight match. Northwest Nazarene (10-8, 5-6) got 19 kills and 17 digs from outside hitter Lindsay Miller and 46 assists from setter Aubrey Harrington.

UAA dominated the first game as Carolyn DeKay banged five of her 16 kills and setter Bethan Murphy dished 14 of her 43 assists.

The Crusaders then took control with more consistent play in Games 2 and 3, vaulting to a 2-1 lead.

In the final game, UAA fought back from a 10-4 deficit to grab a 24-22 lead. But the Crusaders used a timeout to stop the Seawolf momentum and went on to score eight of the last 10 points.

The Seawolves recorded a season-high 114 digs in the loss, including 27 from Diana Gordon and 25 from Rachael Knecht. However, UAA hit just .154, was outblocked 11-7 and allowed 11 aces.

Mitchell finished with a .459 hitting percentage, and her kills-digs performance was her team-best sixth double-double of the season.

UAA has a tough task ahead as it travels to 13th-ranked and undefeated Central Washington on Friday, Oct. 22. The Seawolves then take on Saint Martin's the next night in Lacey, Wash.
