ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 22) - A short-handed UAA volleyball team got a valiant effort Friday night, but it wasn't enough to pull a upset, losing 30-28, 30-20, 30-14 to 13th-ranked Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion.
Mindy Lindquist, Jenny Mitchell and Diana Gordon combined for 24 kills for UAA (9-11, 3-9 GNAC), but the rest of the team combined for just five. Meanwhile, the league-leading Wildcats (20-0, 12-0) recorded 58 kills, led by Cristina Null (14), LeAnne McGahuey (13) and LaQue Branch (12).
Despite missing leading hitter Carolyn DeKay because of a back injury, the Seawolves came out tough in Game 1, taking a 26-25 lead on a service ace by Rachael Knecht (team-high 11 digs). But the Wildcats recovered to score the next four points, and the Seawolves never made another serious run at the favorites.
Lindquist led UAA with nine kills on .471 hitting, while Mitchell had eight kills on .259 hitting. Gordon finished with seven kills and 10 digs.
The Seawolves will try to snap their six-match losing streak Saturday night when they travel to Lacey, Wash., to play Saint Martin's (6 p.m. ADT).
