FAIRBANKS (Oct. 9) - The Seawolf volleyball team got double-digit kills from five players, but fell just short of victory here Saturday, losing 30-24, 31-33, 27-30, 31-29, 16-14 to arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks.
Senior captain Jenny Mitchell banged a career-high 19 kills for UAA (9-8, 3-6 GNAC), while Michelle Boeckman and Carolyn DeKay had 15 apiece. The Nanooks (8-8, 5-4) got 28 kills and 22 digs from Danielle Hitzeman, and 26 kills and 22 digs from Mallory Bergstrom in the thriller.
Freshmen setter Bethan Murphy dished 66 assists, and freshman Rachael Knecht made 31 digs, both season-highs for UAA. Senior middle blockers Katina Ozrelic and Mindy Lindquist combined for 23 kills and six of UAA's eight blocks.
It was the fourth straight match in the series to go five games, with UAF winning for the third time. The Nanooks have now won seven of the last eight matches at the Patty Center.
UAA is back in action Friday, Oct. 15, when it hosts Seattle University at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex (7:05 p.m. ADT).
