ANCHORAGE (Nov. 6) - Carolyn DeKay led a balanced offensive attack with 11 kills, while Diana Gordon and Rachael Knecht combined for 39 digs to lead the UAA volleyball team to a 30-26, 30-25, 30-24 sweep of rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex tonight.
UAA (11-13, 5-11 GNAC) outhit the Nanooks .246 to .128 and served a season-high 11 aces to earn a split of the season series. UAF (11-12, 8-8) got a match-high 15 kills from sophomore Danielle Hitzeman.
All four of UAA's seniors came up big in their final home match, with Katina Ozrelic pounding 10 kills and Jenny Mitchell and Mindy Lindquist ripping nine kills apiece. Reserve Jill Weinman came off the bench in the third game to notch two kills in six attempts.
UAA controlled play throughout Games 1 and 2 as freshman setter Bethan Murphy finished with 39 assists. The third frame was tougher, with UAF jumping to a 13-7 lead, but Kalie Davis served the fourth of her career-high five aces to knot the score at 15-15.
The Seawolves took the lead for good at 22-21 on an Ozrelic kill and wound up scoring 10 of the final 13 points. Mitchell recorded the kill on match point.
The win snapped a four-match home losing streak and extended UAA's home winning streak against the Nanooks to four.
UAA hits the road to Western Oregon and Humboldt State for its final matches of the season, Nov. 11 and 13.
