Seawolves devour Mountaineers

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 30) - Cassie Bro poured in a career-high 21 points and her teammates supported the effort with a balanced attack that led to a 78-52 victory over Western State in non-conference women's basketball action Thursday night.

Bro nailed 4 of 5 three-pointers for UAA (4-6), while Stephanie Beason and Taylor Long contributed their usual solid offense with 14 points each. Western State (3-8) was led in scoring by Alaskan Breanna Bardarson, a Seward native who had 11 points off the bench.

The game wasn't close for long, as UAA turned an 8-7 deficit into a 27-11 advantage over a 10-minute stretch in the first half. Tenecia Macon (9 points, 4-7 FG, 6 rebounds) scored a layin to put the Seawolves up 42-20 at the break, and the visitors from Gunnison, Colo., got no closer than 21 in the second half. UAA led by as many as 33.

Long, UAA's senior center and team captain, hit 6 of 10 field goals to stretch her double-figure point-scoring streak to 10 games, while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Beason, the team's leading scorer, shot just 40 percent from the field but found more ways to contribute with five assists and three steals. Her starting backcourt mate, junior Christa Wilson, also put up a great all-around effort with seven assists, seven rebounds, four points and four steals.

Starting forward Amber Nasby chipped in six points as the Seawolf starters outscored their Mountaineer counterparts 59-18.

The teams will meet again Friday at 6 p.m., in UAA's final game before heading exclusively into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
