UAA women best Western

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 31) - Stephanie Beason scored 25 points Friday, and Taylor Long recorded her first double-double as the UAA women's basketball team completed a two-game sweep with a 64-49 win over Western State at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (5-6) also got 12 points, seven assists and four steals from point guard Christa Wilson, and nine rebounds from forward Amber Nasby. The Mountaineers (3-9) were led by 16 points from guard Ashley Braasch.

Western State, which features 12 freshmen on its roster, hung in for much of the first half before the Seawolves closed with a 9-0 run that included five points from Wilson. UAA increased its 15-point halftime edge as high as 61-34 with 6:43 remaining before the visitors from Gunnison, Colo., made it closer with the reserves in the game.

Beason, UAA's junior sharp-shooter, nailed 6 of 10 three-pointers and 8 of 13 shots overall. It was the fourth time this season she has made six treys in a game.

Meanwhile, Long, who played two seasons at Division I Mount St. Mary's, turned in her best rebounding performance as a Seawolf with 10. The senior captain also stretched her double-digit scoring streak to 11 games with 10 points.

Sophomore post Tenecia Macon was once again effective in limited minutes, scoring six points (3-4 FG) and grabbing five of UAA's season-high 46 rebounds. The Seawolves' plus-11 rebounding margin was also their largest of the season.

UAA heads back into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week, hosting Seattle University and Western Washington at the WFSC. Both games tip at 7:05 p.m.
