ANCHORAGE (Feb. 19) - Western Washington's hot shooting and huge rebounding advantage was too much for the UAA women's basketball team to overcome Thursday in an 82-62 loss at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Kamie Jo Massey led UAA (9-14, 4-10 GNAC) with 20 points, while fellow senior Mindy Mendenhall added 10 points. Western Washington (17-5, 10-3), ranked No. 4 in the West Region, had four players score double figures, including a 22-point, 10-rebound effort from forward Jodi Gerald.
Gerald spotted the Vikings a 37-29 halftime lead by knocking down 3 of 6 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
UAA cut the deficit to 44-40 on Sarah Larrabee's three-pointer with 14:12 left, but WWU responded with a 15-6 spurt and led by double-digits the last eight minutes.
WWU forwards Tessa DeBoer and Tina Donahue scored 13 points apiece, while center Jenn McGillivray chipped in 11. The Vikings shot 50 percent overall (30-60) and from three-point range (7-14), and doubled up the Seawolves on the boards 44-22.
The Seawolves shot a season-best 89.5 percent (17-19) from the free throw line, but struggled from the field at 39 percent.
UAA is back in action Saturday night when it hosts Seattle University at 7:05 p.m.
