Stretch run favors Saints

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 5) - Amber Nasby and Kamie Jo Massey both recorded double-doubles, but the Seawolves couldn't hold off a late Saint Martin's rally as the Saints won 61-55 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game here Thursday.

UAA (8-11, 3-7 GNAC) had its two-game win streak snapped, while Saint Martin's (11-7, 8-2) won for the eighth time in nine games to remain tied for second in the league standings.

Massey had 11 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks. It was the 20th double-double of her career, fourth-best all-time at UAA. Meanwhile, Nasby scored a game-high 19 points (8-15 FG), snagged 10 rebounds and dished four assists for her second double-double. Both Seawolves played the entire 40 minutes.

The Saints had a pair of double-doubles of their own however, as forward Martina Kartikova had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and center Brandi Riel came up with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The visitors from Lacey, Wash., won the game from the three-point line, where they shot 35 percent (7-20) to UAA's 12.5 percent (2-17).

With UAA trailing 35-31 early in the second half, reserve center Mary Aschoff scored three baskets in a 10-0 Seawolf run to put the home team up six points with 10:28 to play. Julia Eisentrout then answered with three straight buckets of her own to give the Saints a one-point lead, and Kartikova kept that advantage going with 11 straight points. Her final basket, a three-pointer with 2:48 left, put the Saints up for good, 53-51, at the 2:54 mark.

Aschoff finished with a season-high six points, while fellow senior Mindy Mendenhall had nine points (4-7 FG) for UAA.

The Seawolves will try to gain a weekend split when they host Northwest Nazarene at the Sports Complex on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:05 p.m.
