ANCHORAGE (Sept. 11) - Carolyn DeKay and Katina Ozrelic combined on an impressive offensive showing for the second straight night to lift the UAA volleyball team to a 16-30, 30-16, 32-30, 30-27 victory over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Libero Rachael Knecht provided the anchor on defense with 28 digs as UAA (8-2, 2-0 GNAC) won its first two Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches for the first time in the 4-year-old league.
Western Oregon (4-5, 0-2) got a match-high 21 kills from Kim Tower, but the visiting Wolves couldn't keep their momentum after crushing UAA in the first game.
As poorly as they played to start the match, the Seawolves turned it around completely in Game 2 behind five kills from Diana Gordon. Gordon finished with 19 digs and a career-high seven kills.
Game 3 was a back-and-forth affair, and Western Oregon seemed in control at 29-26. But Mindy Lindquist recorded two of her six blocks over the next three points to tie it, and ripped one of her eight kills to put UAA up 30-29. After WOU tied it on a Tower kill, DeKay put away one of her 18 kills, and UAA won game point on a Tower attack error.
After leading by as many as five points midway through Game 4, the Seawolves found themselves trailing 22-21 on a kill by WOU's Laura Berdahl. However, UAA took advantage to three straight attack errors by the Wolves to capture the lead for good, and Jenny Mitchell finished the match with an authoritative kill.
Mitchell had 11 kills and Ozrelic tallied 13 on .458 hitting, as they combined with Lindquist, DeKay and Gordon for all of UAA's 57 kills.
Setter Stephanie Martinez had 47 assists, while junior defensive specialist Kalie Davis came off the bench for a season-high 10 digs.
UAA hits the road next week for GNAC matches at Northwest Nazarene (Thur., Sept. 16, 5 p.m. ADT) and Seattle University (Sat., Sept. 18, 6 p.m. ADT).
