ANCHORAGE (Sept. 24) - The UAA volleyball team played even with the 21st-ranked team in the country through two games Friday night before Central Washington came alive to defeat the Seawolves 30-20, 25-30, 30-14, 30-20 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Katina Ozrelic led UAA (8-5, 2-3 GNAC) with 14 kills, and Carolyn DeKay had 10. Meanwhile, the Wildcats (12-0, 4-0) put four players in double-figure kills, led by 20 from Crystal Ames and 18 apiece from LeAnne McGahuey and LaQue Branch.
CWU outhit UAA .301 to .175 and won the kills (72-49) and digs battles (82-72). The Seawolves did manage to outblock the visitors 9-6, but UAA didn't record a single service ace.
DeKay had half of her kills and hit .500 in the Seawolves' Game 2 victory, while Jenny Mitchell slammed five of her eight kills. Mindy Lindquist had a pair of her six total blocks in that frame as well.
Rachael Knecht again led UAA with a match-high 20 digs, and Michelle Boeckman had 18.
Freshman setter Bethan Murphy, playing in her first collegiate match after a preseason knee injury, entered in the third game and finished with 12 assists. Starter Stephanie Martinez had 28 assists in two and a half games.
The Seawolves are now 0-5 at home against the Wildcats since the teams joined the same league (then the Pacific West Conference) in 1999.
UAA will try to snap its 3-match losing streak Saturday night when it hosts Saint Martin's at 7:05.
