ANCHORAGE (Sept. 25) - Katina Ozrelic blasted a career-high 18 kills in just three games Saturday night to lead the UAA volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-25, 30-25 sweep of Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Carolyn DeKay added 13 kills and Mindy Lindquist had 12 as the Seawolves (9-5, 3-3 GNAC) recorded a season-high .319 team hitting percentage. The Saints (2-10, 0-5) were led by 15 kills from outside hitter Andrea Athey.
Ozrelic controlled the action in the middle from start to finish, hitting .533 (18 kills, 2 errors, 30 attempts). The senior from Bend, Ore., had kills on two of the first three points of the match and combined with Jenny Mitchell (8 kills, 5 blocks) for the block on match point.
In between, Ozrelic got plenty of help along the back row as four Seawolves notched double-digits in digs - Michelle Boeckman 18, Rachael Knecht 15, Diana Gordon 12 and Stephanie Martinez a career-high 10. Martinez finished with 47 assists, and Gordon served a career-best six aces.
The first game was controlled by the Seawolves until the Saints rallied from down 28-20 to tie it. But the Seawolves got a kill from Lindquist and Saint Martin's was called for an attack error as the home team squeaked by.
UAA faced deficits of 8-1 in Game 2 and 12-6 in Game 3 before rallying to take control both times. In the final frame, the Saints took a 25-24 lead on Jacque Buchanan ace before the Seawolves answered with three straight kills, two Gordon aces, and wrapped it up on a Saints attack error.
The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Seawolves, who are back in action next weekend at Seattle Pacific (Oct. 1) and 20th-ranked Western Washington (Oct. 2).
