Women win with 2nd-half blitz

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 20) - Megan Archuleta scored a career-high 17 points and point guard Christa Wilson nearly had a triple-double as the UAA women's basketball team pulled out a 71-65 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building on Thursday.

The Seawolves (7-8, 2-4 GNAC) shot 44.6 percent and committed only 10 turnovers as they earned their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference road victory of the season. WOU (4-10, 1-6) was led by 21 points from Leada Berkey, and 13 points and 13 rebounds from center Shannon Talbott.

Neither team led by more than five points in a tightly contested first half, and the teams went into the locker room tied 37-37.

Senior forward Amber Nasby got the Seawolves off to a fast start in the second half, scoring eight of her 12 points (5-6 FG) in an opening 18-4 run that would be the difference.

A three-pointer by Archuleta (7-13 FG, 3-7 3FG) gave UAA its largest lead, 60-45, with 12:43 remaining.

The Wolves, who lost their eighth straight game, crept back within 64-60 at the 6:11 mark, but that was as close as they would get.

Seawolf centers Taylor Long and Tenecia Macon had one of their most effective combined efforts of the season, accounting for 27 points (12-22 FG) and 12 rebounds. Of course, much of the credit also went to Wilson, who had eight points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals in 38 minutes.

UAA will try to repeat its 2003-04 road sweep of the two southernmost GNAC schools when it visits Humboldt State on Saturday in Arcata, Calif. Tip time is 6 p.m. AST.
