ANCHORAGE (Jan. 27) - Stephanie Beason scored 18 points and Tenecia Macon recorded a double-double, but the key shots wouldn't fall for the Seawolf women's basketball team Thursday night in a 61-58 loss to Northwest Nazarene at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (7-10, 2-6 GNAC) also got 14 points from Christa Wilson, while Northwest Nazarene (7-10, 3-5) was led by double-doubles from Whitney VanBrocklin and Jessica Metz.
The Seawolves trailed by 10 in the opening stanza, but cut their halftime deficit to 34-27 when Christa Wilson went coast-to-coast in four seconds and hit a running jumper at the buzzer.
Wilson and Beason delivered immediately to start the second 20 minutes, combining for all the points in a 10-2 run that gave UAA a 39-36 lead. The game turned into a defensive struggle after that, with neither club leading by more than four points the rest of the way.
Two VanBrocklin free throws with 2:34 left forged the sixth and final tie of the game at 52-52. NNU's Trisha Lind made a steal and layup 20 seconds later, and Metz (11 points, 10 rebounds) hit two free throws to give the Crusaders a 56-52 advantage.
A Beason three and a Macon layup worked the deficit down to 59-58 with 20 seconds left, and Faith Sacht made one of two free throws to give her team a 2-point lead. Beason then took the ball with 10 seconds and dribbled the length of the court, missing a twisting jumper in the lane.
Sacht got the rebound and made another free throw with two-tenths of a second remaining to provide the final margin.
Macon finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while fellow East High alum Wilson shot 6-of-12 to go with five points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
UAA held the Crusaders to just 30 percent shooting from the floor, but the Seawolves hurt themselves at the free throw line, going just 7 for 21 (33 percent).
The Seawolves will try to get back in the win column Saturday when they host Saint Martin's at the WFSC at 7:05 p.m.
