ANCHORAGE (Jan. 29) - The Seawolf women's basketball team played one of its finest opening halves of the season Saturday night, but visiting Saint Martin's turned things around in the second 20 minutes to escape with a 68-56 victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (7-11, 2-7 GNAC) got balanced scoring, with five players totaling eight or more points, but the Saints' senior duo of Julia Eisentrout and Martina Kartikova were too much in the end.
Eisentrout poured in 20 of her 29 points during SMC's second-half comeback, while Kartikova was all over the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Freshman wing Megan Archuleta led the Seawolves in scoring for the second time in the last four games, tallying 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Tenecia Macon came off the bench for 12 points (6-9 FG) and seven rebounds, Stephanie Beason scored 10 points, and Amber Nasby pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Seawolves clicked in the first half, making 53 percent of their shots and outrebounding the Saints 20-13. UAA built its lead as high as 37-26 lead against the West Region's sixth-ranked club, when Macon hit a layup with 1:36 left in the first half.
The Saints closed with the last six points of the stanza, however, and opened the second half with a 15-2 burst to take control. UAA never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
The Seawolves travel next week to nationally ranked Western Washington and Seattle University, beginning a stretch of five of the next seven games on the road.
