ANCHORAGE (Jan. 8) - Five Seawolves scored in double-figures but it wasn't quite enough Saturday as the UAA women's basketball was edged 61-59 by Western Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Amber Nasby and Taylor Long led UAA (6-7, 1-3 GNAC) with 12 points apiece, while point guard Christa Wilson pulled down a personal-best 11 rebounds. The Vikings (11-1, 3-0) extended their win streak to 11 games thanks to the hot shooting of guard Devin Dykstra (21 points, 4-5 FG, 11-12 FT) and 15 points from center Courtney Clapp.
The Seawolves led 29-25 at halftime before the Vikings answered with a 16-6 surge to start the second half. UAA answered, however, and went on a 9-0 run of its own, sparked by six straight points from center Tenecia Macon (10 points, 4 rebounds).
With the score 55-55 at the 2-minute mark, Dystra calmly buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Vikings the lead. A Nasby layup was followed by a free throw from Cassie Bro (11 points) to tie it again, but Clapp drew a foul on the next possession and sank the game-winning free throws with 24 seconds to play.
UAA had a chance to tie, but Bro missed the second of two free throws with 10 seconds left, and the Vikings were able to run seven seconds off the clock before getting fouled.
Long, who shot 4 of 7 from both the field and the free throw line, fouled out after playing only 22 minutes, while five other Seawolves wound up with four fouls. The game featured 54 total fouls and 66 free throw attempts.
The Seawolves have six days to prepare for their next game, Jan. 15 at against Alaska Fairbanks. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
