ANCHORAGE (Oct. 20) - The Seawolf volleyball team couldn't capitalize on a career night from Heather Lyons as visiting Northwest Nazarene pulled off a 30-24, 30-25, 28-30, 30-24 victory over UAA at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex tonight.
UAA (6-14, 3-9 GNAC) got 18 kills and 20 digs from Lyons, a freshman outside hitter, while a trio of Seawolves banged 12 kills apiece. NNU (7-13, 5-7) took command thanks to Lindsey Fryer's 21 kills and Allison James' 14 kills and 11 digs.
The Seawolves started the match sluggishly, falling behind by at least seven points early in the first two games. UAA finished each of those frames with strong runs, but it wasn't enough to prevent it from falling into a 2-0 hole.
Lyons ripped seven kills and had seven digs in the third game to help UAA extend the match. However, visitors from Nampa, Idaho, responded with a solid .245 hitting percentage in the fourth game to seal it.
Lyons' 18 kills matched her own team-season-best output, and she became just the second Seawolf this year to post at least 15 kills and 20 digs in a match. Redshirt freshman Brenda Cooper had 12 kills and eight digs; freshman Caitlin Grenier slammed 12 kills and posted four blocks; and junior Jasmine Ames tallied 12 digs for UAA.
Junior setter Stephanie Martinez dished 50 assists to move into ninth place on UAA's career list with 1,091. Meanwhile, freshman libero Cristal Negron recorded her first career kill.
The Seawolves return to the court Saturday at 7 p.m. to challenge 18th-ranked Seattle Pacific.
