Glines' big night not enough at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Oct. 27) - UAA's Chelsey Glines had a Great Northwest Athletic Conference season-best 11 blocks Thursday, but it wasn't enough to save the Seawolves from a narrow loss to host Western Oregon, 30-27, 30-27, 24-30, 30-28.

UAA (6-16, 3-11 GNAC) was also led by 15 kills from Heather Lyons, and 20 digs from Rachael Knecht. WOU (9-12, 6-7) won the key points of the match, however, thanks mostly to Katrina Johnson's 19-kill, 6-block performance.

After dropping the first game, the Seawolves went up 27-22 in the second frame on a Stephanie Martinez ace. Western Oregon called timeout and answered with an impressive 8-0 run, getting three kills from Johnson and a pair from Nicole Kludt, to go up two games to none.

The Seawolves scratched out a victory in Game 3, and found themselves trailing 28-25 in the fourth when Brenda Cooper banged a kill, followed by two more from Lyons. Knotted at 28, Johnson would have the last say, however, ripping consecutive kills to close the match.

Glines' performance was part of 19 team blocks for the Seawolves, also a GNAC season-best. The junior middle blocker had five solos and six block assists.

Although it can in a losing effort, it was also a successful debut for Knecht, UAA's sophomore libero who had missed the first 23 matches after off-season surgery to repair her anterior cruciate ligament.

The Seawolves close their road season Saturday, Oct. 29 when they visit Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif. First serve is 6 p.m. ADT.
