Carpenter, 'Wolves hammer Nanooks

FAIRBANKS (Oct. 7) - Sophomore Jenny Carpenter had 16 kills and 22 digs Friday to lead the Seawolf volleyball team back from an early deficit in a 23-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-20 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

UAA (5-12, 2-7 GNAC) also got 15 kills from freshman Brenda Cooper and seven blocks from junior Chelsey Glines as it snapped a four-match losing skid. UAF (1-12, 1-8) was led by April Blandford's 14 kills.

Both teams came out sharp in the first game, as UAA hit an impressive .300 in the frame but was outdone by UAF's .447 percentage. The Seawolves turned up the defense in the next game, however, building an early 16-9 lead. UAF would score the next four points before a UAA timeout switched the momentum permanently in the Seawolves' favor, as the visitors responded with a five-point run to re-establish a comfortable lead.

The Seawolves, who wound up with a season-high .275 team attack percentage, secured the win by holding their rivals to under .100 hitting in each of the last three games. Carpenter was huge part of the success of both offense and defense as the Soldotna (Skyview HS) native earned her second 15-kill/20-dig performance of the year, the only Seawolf to accomplish that feat in 2005.

Glines, Jasmine Ames and Caitlin Grenier all tallied nine kills for the Seawolves, while Grenier had 11 digs. Freshman libero Cristal Negron served a career-best four aces, including match point, and junior setter Lindsey Robertson dished 37 assists to go with her 10 digs.

The victory was the Seawolves' first on the road this season, and their in Fairbanks since 2001. UAA now leads the series 51-28, including 21-19 in Fairbanks.

UAA begins the second half of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule next week with matches at Saint Martin's (Thu., Oct. 13) and league-leading Seattle University (Sat., Oct. 15).
