Volleyball secures state bragging rights

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 5) - Freshman Heather Lyons led a balanced attack with 15 kills Saturday as the UAA volleyball team cruised past Alaska Fairbanks, 30-20, 30-23, 30-20 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Junior middle blocker Chelsey Glines had 13 kills and four blocks for the Seawolves (7-17, 4-12 GNAC), who swept the season series from their oldest rival for the first time since 2001. The win also assured UAA an eighth-place outright finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

UAF (1-19, 1-15) was led by April Blandford's 10 kills on impressive .529 hitting.

Despite Blandford's efforts, it was the Seawolves who dominated nearly every statistical category. UAA outhit the Nanooks .277 to .063, outdug them 47-34, and posted a 6-3 edge in aces.

Things looked as if they might stay close early, with the Nanooks trailing just 15-13 midway through the first game. However, the Seawolves then went on a 12-2 blitz to run away to for a 1-0 advantage.

UAA extended to early leads of 14-7 in Game 2 and 19-12 in Game 3, and was never seriously challenged as it ran its win streak in the series to three. The Seawolves now lead the all-time series 52-28, including 30-9 in Anchorage.

Junior outside hitter Jasmine Ames continued her good play for UAA, ripping 11 kills on career-best .364 hitting, while freshman Caitlin Grenier banged nine kills with a .400 attack percentage.

Juniors Stephanie Martinez (28 assists) and Lindsey Roberts (14 assists) split the setting duties with impressive results. Meanwhile, Lyons and freshman libero Cristal Negron paced the Seawolves with nine digs apiece.

The win also assures the Seawolves of avoiding their first 20-loss season since 1995.

UAA ends its season next week with matches against nationally ranked Central Washington (Thu., Nov. 10) and Western Washington (Sat., Nov. 12) at the WFSC. First serve both nights is 7 p.m.
