Riser rallies Seawolves past Cougars

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 2) - Mari Riser scored 19 points and sparked a huge mid-game run that helped the UAA women's basketball team to a 73-47 non-conference victory over Colorado Christian on Friday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.


Center Rebecca Kielpinski scored 16 points for the Seawolves (3-2), while fellow freshman Sarah Jones poured in 13 points. CCU (1-5) got 14 points from guard Sara Davis and 11 points from forward Jeanee Burton.


The visiting Cougars, of the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, jumped to an early 14-6 lead after eight minutes. But CCU, which committed no turnovers in its opening burst, succumbed to UAA's pressure defense, making 29 turnovers the rest of the way.


Freshman Tristan Burnett's jumper at started a 10-0 Seawolf run that gave UAA its first advantage of the night at 16-14. A pair of free throws by Monica Chase gave CCU a 24-23 lead with 2:23 to play in the first half, but the Seawolves took control from there. Riser tallied seven quick points in UAA's 11-0 run to end the half, and the Seawolves outscored the Cougars 22-2 over the first eight minutes of the second stanza.


Riser, a junior guard from Roosevelt, Utah, shot 7 of 8 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the free throw line, while dishing three assists. Kielpinski had another solid shooting performance as well, making 8 of 12 field goals in just 22 minutes. Jones did most of her damage from the charity stripe, where she hit 7 of 8.


Riser, Kielpinski, Jones and senior forward Kelsey Larsen all grabbed five rebounds to help the home team to a 35-20 advantage on the boards, and the team committed a season-low 15 turnovers. Freshman point guard Limor Pelleg dished a team-high six assists.


The Seawolves and Cougars will play a rematch Saturday at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
