Humboldt halts UAA win streak

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 29) - Mari Riser scored 17 points and Rebecca Kielpinski posted a double-double, but the Seawolf women's basketball team couldn't dig out from a 15-point halftime deficit in a 75-67 loss to Humboldt State on Friday. UAA (7-3, 0-1 GNAC) had its five-game win streak snapped by HSU (6-4, 1-0) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Seawolves got a combined 42 points from their trio of starting guards - Riser, Limor Pelleg (career-high 15 points), and Tristan Burnett (10 pts) - but the Lumberjacks also put four players in double-figures, led by forward Jenna Washington's 23 points and four blocks. Fellow front-courter Kelly Fay had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for the visitors from Arcata, Calif., as well.

UAA led 6-4 early as both teams struggled to find their offense. After being tied at 10-10, HSU took control with a 9-2 spurt that included three baskets by Washington. April Olson's layup at the 6:39 mark cut it to 19-17, but that was as close as the Seawolves would get the rest of the night.

The Seawolves came out more focused after the halftime break and cut the deficit to six on several occasions, including Pelleg's layup that made it 53-47 with 11:22 left. The Lumberjacks answered right back on their next possession, however, getting a three-pointer from diminutive point guard Monica Coquilla to stop the charge.

UAA got within six twice in the final minute before HSU's Katie Wilder sealed the game by making 4 of 4 free throws.

Kielpinski finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for her fourth double-double of the season, but UAA's freshman standout had a rare poor shooting performance, making just 5 of 15 from the field. She had entered the game with a GNAC-best .606 field goal percentage.

The Seawolves get right back into GNAC action Saturday when they host Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Tip-off is 3 p.m. AST.
