Women win with big 2nd half

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 31) - Rebecca Kielpinski scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and the rest of the Seawolf offense came alive in the second half as the UAA women's basketball team notched a 64-45 victory Saturday over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (8-3, 1-1 GNAC), which won for the sixth time in seven outings and recorded its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory of the season, also got 11 points from Tristan Burnett. WOU (0-11, 0-2) was led by forward Leada Berkey's 16 points and seven rebounds.

The visiting Wolves took an early 16-13 lead midway through the first half, and the game was tied for the seventh time at 22-22 before the Seawolves took a 27-24 advantage into the locker room. At that point Kielpinski, a 6-2 freshman center, had 14 of UAA's points and nine of the team's 20 rebounds.

After Kaila Hawley tied it with a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half, the Seawolf defense took control and led to an 8-0 run over the next seven minutes. That spurt included a pair of baskets by senior forward Kelsey Larsen, who had been held without a point or a rebound in the first half. The senior forward came back with a terrific second 20 minutes, and finished with nine points and four boards.

Burnett scored seven of her points in the second half, including a three-pointer with 6:19 remaining that made it 53-40, while fellow freshman guard Limor Pelleg had another solid outing with eight points (2-5 3FG), four assists, no turnovers, two blocks and three steals in 36 minutes.

Junior forward Tenecia Macon, a 2004-05 letterwinner who rejoined the team at the semester break, was a spark off the bench with six points and five rebounds. Meanwhile, fellow Anchorage native Sarah Jones tallied six points, three assists and no turnovers in 23 minutes, helping the Seawolves match their season-low in the turnover department.

Kielpinski posted her fifth double-double by shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the free throw line, and snaring 13 boards on the defensive end. The North Dakota native matched her season average with three blocks and also grabbed a pair of steals in 37 minutes.

The Seawolves go on the road for the first time this season when they travel Jan. 7 to Fairbanks to take on arch-rival UAF. That game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip at the Patty Center.
