Women rally past Wolves in 2nd half

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 19) - Taylor Long and Megan Archuleta combined for 28 points, and Laura Gyllenberg and O'Lita McWilliams provided a spark off the bench Saturday as the UAA women's basketball team notched a 69-53 victory over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (9-14, 4-10 GNAC) shot a season-high 52.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Wolves 41-24 to gain a sweep of the season series.

Forwards Kagney Kohne and Shannon Talbott combined for 41 points for WOU (5-18, 2-13).

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring seven lead changes. WOU took a 33-32 lead into the locker room despite McWilliams scoring all six of her career-high point total in the first half. It was the best game of the season for the former UAA volleyball star, who shot 3-of-4, grabbed three rebounds and made a steal in 12 minutes.

After WOU scored the first bucket of the second half, the Seawolves would embark on a game-deciding 10-0 run over the next four minutes. Archuleta (13 points, 5-11 FG, 3-6 3FG, career-high 7 rebounds) nailed a three and then fed Long for a conventional three-point play on the ensuing possession to make it 52-39 with 9:21 to play.

Gyllenberg, who scored all of her career-high nine points (3-3 FG, 2-2 3FG, 1-1 FT) in the second half, put the game away with back-to-back three-pointers that put UAA up 62-43 with five minutes left. The freshman point guard from Baker, Ore., also dished five assists and grabbed a pair of steals.

Long finished with 15 points (6-10 FG, 3-3 FT), while senior Amber Nasby had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Starting point guard Christa Wilson fought foul trouble all night but wound up with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Seawolves return to the road for the final time this season when they take on Saint Martin's (Thur., Feb. 24) in Lacey, Wash., and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Feb. 26) in Nampa, Idaho.
