LACEY, Wash. (Feb. 24) - The Seawolves hung tough with one of the top teams in the West Region on Thursday, but couldn't complete a late rally in a 59-46 women's basketball loss to Saint Martin's.
UAA (9-15, 4-11 GNAC) was led by 11 points from center Taylor Long and career-highs of 11 rebounds and five assists from forward Kelsey Larsen. The Saints (18-6, 12-3), the region's fifth-ranked squad, got a combined 30 points and 17 rebounds from Martina Kartikova and Whitney Golob.
The Seawolves took an early 18-13 lead before the Saints came back for a 26-24 halftime advantage. Saint Martin's opened the second stanza with a 12-2 spurt that made it 38-26, but UAA would not fade. Stephanie Beason (9 points, 3-6 3FG) nailed a three-pointer and made a steal to spark an 8-point Seawolf run that cut it to 43-39 at the 8:16 mark.
Another Beason trey trimmed the Saints' cushion to 47-44 with 5:50 remaining, but the Seawolves would not score again from the field.
UAA outshot (40.5 percent to 33.3 percent) and outrebounded (35-29) its hosts, but the Seawolves committed 14 more turnovers (25-11) and were outscored 26-7 from the free throw line.
Larsen, who was playing an hour from her hometown of Mukilteo, grabbed five of her 11 rebounds on the offensive end, while playing a career-high 40 minutes. The junior tied her previous high of five assists, which came Feb. 20, 2003 on the same SMC Pavilion court.
The Seawolves play their final road game of the season Saturday against Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. Alaska Standard Time.
