Crusaders creep past Seawolf women

NAMPA, Idaho (Feb. 26) - Taylor Long notched a double-double and Stephanie Beason scored 15 points, but the Seawolf defense couldn't slow host Northwest Nazarene in a 81-67 women's basketball loss at Montgomery Fieldhouse on Saturday.

UAA (9-16, 4-12 GNAC) shot 47 percent and outrebounded the Crusaders 35-28, while NNU (8-17, 4-12) made 54 percent of its field goals, led by Danielle Pridgen's 18-point effort.

The Seawolves came out firing and led by four points midway through the first half before falling behind by seven early in the second stanza. Long (career-high 22 points, 10 rebounds) then capped a Seawolf run with a jumper that put her team up 55-54 at the 11:21 mark.

The Crusaders answered, however, with a jumper from Whitney VanBrocklin (11 points) and a three-pointer by Jessica Metz (15 points) to re-establish a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Long finished 9 of 13 from the field on the way to her second double-double this season, while Beason shot 3 of 6 from three-point range.

Point guard Christa Wilson was one steal shy of the school record, becoming the 10th player in UAA women's history to grab nine in a game.

The Seawolves conclude their season Thursday and Saturday with home games against Central Washington and fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific. Both games tip at 7:05 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
