SEATTLE (Feb. 5) - Christa Wilson scored 13 points and Amber Nasby nearly posted a double-double Saturday as the UAA women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak with a 56-51 win over Seattle University at the Connolly Center.
UAA (8-12, 3-8 GNAC) also got 12 points from Tenecia Macon and 10 from Megan Archuleta. Seattle (8-12, 3-8) had a game-high 18 points from Amanda Kerr off the bench, but put no other players in double figures.
The Seawolves trailed 33-25 at halftime and fell behind 44-31 with 15:42 to play. But Wilson (4-10 FG, 5-8 FT, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) started UAA's comeback with a layup on the next possession, then gathered one of her three assists by feeding Macon for a layin 30 seconds later.
Kerr put the Redhawks back up by 11 with 10:54 remaining, but UAA's defense clamped down and held the home team without a field goal until Kerr's meaningless jumper at the final buzzer.
Nasby, who had a solid all-around effort with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks, finally gave the Seawolves their first lead since 2-0 when she drained a pair of free throws with 5 minutes left, making it 50-48. Macon scored on the next possession, and Redhawks would not get closer than three points the rest of the way.
UAA, which won despite zero points from leading scorer Stephanie Beason (14.2 ppg), forced the Redhawks into 23 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 34-28. The Seawolves shot 47.9 percent from the field, despite not hitting a three-pointer, and outscored the Redhawks 10-5 from the free throw line to provide the winning margin.
UAA also got a big contribution off the bench from Kelsey Larsen, who scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.
The win gave UAA a sweep of the season series and their fifth win in the last six meetings against SU.
UAA is on the road again next week to take on arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks, Feb. 12 at the Patty Center.
