HILO, Hawaii (Aug. 27) - Freshman Caitlin Grenier had 13 kills, but it wasn't enough Saturday as the UAA volleyball team dropped its third straight match at the Hawaiian Style Classic, losing 30-27, 30-28, 30-21 to host Hawaii-Hilo.
Another freshman, outside hitter Heather Lyons, had the Seawolves' first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Taina Savage and Rose Ramsey combined for 34 kills for the Vulcans (3-2).
The Seawolves had great chances to win the first and second games, jumping to a 22-18 advantage in the opening frame. But UHH answered with nine of the next 10 points and fended off UAA to take the lead. Game 2 was tied nine times, the final occurrence coming at 26-26 on a Stephanie Martinez ace, before Savage banged the final kill to take it 30-28.
Jenny Carpenter had seven kills and racked up a career-high in digs for the second straight match with 15. Martinez delivered a season-best 37 assists.
The Seawolves take on 8th-ranked Hawaii Pacific in their final match at the Classic later tonight. UAA will get another shot at UHH when its opens its home season against the Vulcans on Sept. 1 in the Seawolves' own Aspen Hotels Invitational.
