Crusaders outlast Seawolves in 5

NAMPA, Idaho (Sep. 24) - The UAA volleyball team played one of its better matches of the season Saturday, but couldn't put host Northwest Nazarene away in a wild fourth game as the Crusaders came back for a 28-30, 30-21, 24-30, 34-32, 15-10 victory over the Seawolves at the Johnson Sports Center.

Sophomore outside hitter Jenny Carpenter had a career-high 17 kills on .471 hitting for UAA (4-10, 1-5 GNAC), while freshman outside hitter Brenda Cooper delivered 15 kills and contributed on seven of the team's season-high 15 blocks.

NNU (5-8, 3-2) pulled out the victory thanks to 20 kills from Lindsey Fryer and an incredible .526 hitting percentage in the fifth and deciding game.

The Seawolves, who hit for a season-high .272 team percentage, also got 14 kills from junior Chelsey Glines and 11 from freshman Caitlin Grenier. Glines had an impressive five solo blocks, while Carpenter led the way on the back-row defense with 20 digs.

Setter Lindsey Robertson got her first start as a Seawolf and responded with 59 assists, 14 digs and a pair of aces. Freshman libero Cristal Negron also had 14 digs for UAA.

The Seawolves took the first and third games thanks to respective .294 and .357 hitting percentages in those frames, and they jumped to a quick 13-9 lead in the fourth game as well. But the Crusaders bounced back and took the lead in the late-going. UAA managed to fight off several game points, but it wasn't enough to avoid a fifth game.

In the fifth, NNU pulled away with three straight points to make it 5-2 and never let the Seawolves get any closer. The Crusaders had 11 kills and only one error in 19 attempts in that game, while the Seawolves lost despite solid .375 (7-1-16) hitting.

The Seawolves return home next week to take on GNAC rivals Humboldt State and Western Oregon, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. First serve both nights is 7 p.m.
