ANCHORAGE (Sep. 29) - The Seawolf volleyball team got a solid showing from freshman Heather Lyons, but struggled in almost every other aspect as visiting Humboldt State emerged Thursday with a 30-24, 30-23, 30-27 victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (4-11, 1-6 GNAC) also got 10 kills from Chelsey Glines and 15 digs from Jenny Carpenter, while Humboldt State (6-8, 2-4) won behind a balanced attack that featured at least seven kills from five different players.
Lyons, an outside hitter from South Anchorage High School, finished with 13 kills and 12 digs for her team-high fourth double-double. However, the Seawolves managed just a .107 team hitting percentage and were outdug 69-60 by the visitors from Arcata, Calif.
HSU's Courtney Lee (10 kills, 20 digs) and Katie Norkunas (10 kills, 17 digs) each posted double-doubles for the Lumberjacks.
After falling behind early in dropping the first game, UAA seemed more poised to start the second, jumping to a quick 3-0 lead. The Lumberjacks responded with a huge run, however, and built their lead to a seemingly insurmountable 19-6. UAA bounced back to win 14 of the next 18 points, drawing to within 23-20, before an HSU timeout stopped the momentum and resulted in a game-winning Lumberjack run.
The Seawolves rallied for a 16-8 advantage in the third game and held a 25-22 lead late, but HSU once again used a timeout to switch the momentum and took the match with eight of the next 10 points.
The loss was UAA's first to Humboldt at home in six all-time meetings.
The Seawolves will attempt to halt their three-match losing streak Saturday when they host Western Oregon at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
