WOU comeback foils Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 1) - The Seawolf volleyball team was the victim of an improbable Western Oregon comeback Saturday night as the visiting Wolves pulled off a 30-32, 22-30, 30-17, 30-20, 16-14 victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Freshman Heather Lyons had her second straight double-double for UAA (4-12, 1-7 GNAC) as the Seawolves dropped their fourth consecutive match. WOU (7-8, 5-2) won behind a balanced attack that was led by 18 kills from Laura Sakala.

The Wolves, of Monmouth, Ore., pulled a repeat of their 3-2 win at Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, when they also fell lost the first two games 2-0 before storming back.

The fifth game was a back-and-forth affair that featured eight lead changes and 10 ties. UAA had a pair of match points after Brenda Cooper's kill made it 14-12, but WOU's Stacie Matz (10 kills) fended off the first opportunity, and Lyons' screaming spike was ruled barely past the endline to force the tie. Another Matz kill gave the Wolves the lead, and Katrina Johnson stuffed Caitlin Grenier's attack at the middle of the net on match point.

Lyons finished with 12 kills and 12 digs for her team-high fifth double-double, while Chelsey Glines was the only other Seawolf in double-figures with 10 kills. Jenny Carpenter had eight kills and tied for team-high digs honors with libero Cristal Negron with 14.

The Seawolves will try to get back on the winning track Friday, Oct. 7 when they make their annual trip to Fairbanks to take on arch-rival UAF.
