ANCHORAGE (Jan. 19) - Beth Layton made one of two free throws with 0.8 seconds on the clock Thursday to lift Saint Martin's to a 62-61 women's basketball victory over UAA at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (8-7, 1-5 GNAC) was led by 23 points and 12 rebounds from freshman center Rebecca Kielpinski, while SMU (7-8, 3-3) got a game-high 29 points from Layton, with 24 coming in the second half.
The Seawolves, who also got 10 points and seven rebounds from senior forward Kelsey Larsen, seemed to take control midway through the second half. With a 7-0 run, the Seawolves went up 47-40 with 8:07 to play on a traditional three-point play by Larsen.
But the Saints kept chipping away and forged a tie at 57-57 with 2:31 left. After a pair of Seawolf free throws, Layton tied it again at the 1:20 mark. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference's top scorer then continued her late-game heroics with a layup off an out-of-bounds play with 35 seconds to go, giving the Saints their first lead since 12-10.
UAA's Mari Riser drove aggressively and swished a short, running jumper with 8 seconds on the clock to make it 61-61, and the Saints immediately got the ball to their senior leader. Layton drove through a maze of defenders toward the lane and earned two free throws when UAA's Kim Brady was whistled for her fifth foul.
Layton, an 83 percent free throw shooter, missed the first of her two attempts, but calmly converted the clincher after a UAA timeout.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Seawolves and only the second in 10 games at the WFSC this season.
Kielpinski's double-double was the sixth of her young career, while point guard Limor Pelleg dished eight assists.
UAA outshot the Saints 49 percent to 35 percent, but 28 Seawolf turnovers proved costly in the final outcome.
The Seawolves return to action Saturday with another league home game against Seattle University. That contest starts at 5 p.m. AST.
