NAMPA, Idaho (Jan. 26) - Center Rebecca Kielpinski scored 23 of her school freshman-record 30 points in the second half Thursday as the Seawolf women's basketball team fell short in a comeback attempt at Northwest Nazarene, losing 66-55.
UAA (8-9, 1-7 GNAC) also got 10 points from junior guard Mari Riser in dropping its sixth straight. NNU (9-6, 5-3), ranked 10th in the latest West Region poll, was led by 16 points from guard Kara Gonzalez, plus 14 points and 11 rebounds from forward Danielle Dwello.
The 6-foot-2 Kielpinski, who shot 13 of 24 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw stripe, broke the 20-year-old freshman mark of 28 points scored by Robin Graul (vs. Iona, 1986). The Mandan, N.D., native rallied the Seawolves from a 19-point deficit with nine minutes to play, bringing them within 60-53 with 1:30 left. UAA could get no closer, however, as Gonzalez and Dwello sealed the game from the charity stripe.
The Seawolves outshot the Crusaders 44 percent to 33 percent, but failed to make a three-pointer and were hurt by 27 turnovers.
Kielpinski also had 12 rebounds to record her league-best seventh double-double this season. Riser led UAA with five assists, while freshman guard Limor Pelleg had three steals.
The Seawolves complete their road trip against another regionally ranked opponent, Saturday at Seattle Pacific (12:30 p.m. AST).
