FAIRBANKS (Jan. 7) -
Mari Riser scored a career-high 23 points but the Seawolf women had a rough first road trip of the season, losing 80-72 to rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center on Saturday.
UAA (8-4, 1-2 GNAC) also got double-digit scoring from freshmen Tristan Burnett, Sarah Jones and Limor Pelleg, while the Nanooks (5-6, 2-1) were led by hot-shooting guard Sheena Brown's 24-point effort.
The Seawolves never led, although they tied it for the fifth time at 56-56 on Rebecca Kielpinski's layup with 6:19 to play. UAF then responded with five straight points to take the lead for good. Pelleg (10 points, 4 steals, 40 minutes) sliced the deficit to 63-62 with a three-pointer at the 3-minute mark, but that's as close as the Seawolves would get.
Kielpinski, UAA's freshman center and the second-leading scorer (19.2 ppg) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, was held to season-lows of eight points and four rebounds while playing only 21 minutes because of foul trouble.
Meanwhile, Nanook freshman Brown drained 8 of 12 shots, including 4 of 5 from three-point range to power the home team. UAF finished 7 of 13 on treys as a team.
Riser shot 8 of 13 from field and grabbed six rebounds as she played 38 minutes, while Burnett made 6 of 15 for 13 points and logged 39 minutes.
The Seawolves continue their road swing next week with games at Central Washington (Jan. 12) and nationally ranked Western Washington (Jan. 14).
