SEATTLE – Junior Kim Stolk had nine kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team played evenly through two games with the 13th-ranked team in Division II Saturday, but host Seattle Pacific escaped eventually with a 30-12, 23-30, 30-20, 30-19 victory over the Seawolves at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
UAA (5-19, 2-13 GNAC) also got eight kills and six block assists from senior Chelsey Jones as it dropped its sixth straight match. SPU (23-2, 15-0) was powered by a match-high 19 kills from Rachel Biornstad and 14 kills from Angie Wodrich as it won its 17th straight overall and 19th in a row at home.
After being dominated in the first game, the Seawolves came out stronger in the second frame, forging a 23-23 tie and shocking the Falcons with a seven-point run to even the match. Jones had three kills and three of her block assists in the decisive run.
UAA kept things tight with a 12-12 tie midway through the third, but the Falcons would assert themselves at that point and cruise to a win that clinched at least a share of the GNAC title.
UAA also got 25 assists, 13 digs and three block assists from freshman setter Tehane Kahalehau, plus six kills and 10 digs from junior outside hitter Paepaetele Poasa.
The Seawolves conclude their 2006 campaign next Saturday (Nov. 4) with a 7 p.m. AST showdown at arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks.
