Seawolf women crush Cougars in season opener

ANCHORAGE ? Rebecca Kielpinski had 17 points to lead five double-digit scorers Saturday as the Tim Moser era began for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team with a 102-53 win over Mid-Continent at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves shot 48 percent and forced 29 turnovers to top the century mark for the first time in eight years, getting 14 points from Jayci Stone and 12 points from Limor Pelleg.

Mid-Continent (3-2), an NAIA school from Mayfield, Ky., was led by Sarah Cripps' game-high 23 points.

UAA came out slow against the energized Cougars, falling behind 9-7 on a pair of Cripps free throws five minutes into the game. But back-to-back baskets by senior Tenecia Lockard pulled the Seawolves ahead and started a 20-2 run over the next five minutes.

The Seawolves forged a 46-24 advantage at halftime when Pelleg sank a three-pointer from the corner, and the rout was on with a 9-0 spurt to begin the second half.

Junior guard Erin Cunningham, playing her first game at the Division II level after four knee surgeries, scored seven points, including the bucket that made it 100-48 with a minute to play.

It was the first time the UAA women have scored triple-digits since a 102-25 victory over Warner Pacific to begin the 1998-99 campaign.

Junior Maria Nilsson and freshman Kat Harley scored 11 points apiece for UAA, combining for 9-of-14 shooting from the floor. Sophomore guard Tristan Burnett got off to a solid start as well, tallying game-highs of six assists and four steals.

The Seawolves dished 30 assists to just 13 turnovers and held the visitors to a 4-to-29 ratio in those categories. UAA made 40 field goals while allowing just 44 field-goal attempts for Mid-Continent.

The two teams will get together for a rematch Monday at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
