ANCHORAGE ? Senior Jayci Stone scored 16 points and junior Maria Nilsson added 13 Monday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rolled to another victory over Mid-Continent, 80-36, at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (2-0) also got 10 points from sophomore guard Tristan Burnett as they forced 41 turnovers and shot 49 percent from the field.
Mid-Continent (3-3), an NAIA school from Mayfield, Ky., got eight points and 14 rebounds from center Omega Key.
UAA managed just six points in the game's first eight minutes but still held a 6-4 lead. Freshman guard Keyona Brooks would spark a huge Seawolf rally at that point, nailing a 19-foot jumper to spark a 19-0 run.
The Seawolves built a 46-15 cushion at halftime by forcing 28 Cougar turnovers and holding MCU to just 5-of-14 shooting. For the game, Mid-Continent made 12 of 34 from the field, while UAA shot 33 of 68.
UAA All-America candidate Rebecca Kielpinski scored a career-low seven points to have her streak of double-digit scoring performances halted at 16. It was just the second time in 29 career games that Kielpinski has failed to crack double digits. The sophomore center did have a solid all-around game, however, coming up with five blocks, four steals and three assists.
Senior guard Meghan Vaughan dished a game-high six assists and grabbed three steals, while centers Tenecia Lockard and Kat Harley tossed in six points apiece.
The Seawolves have a week off before hosting their annual flagship event, the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 21-22 at Sullivan Arena. UAA will take on Air Force in the first round Tuesday at 6 p.m., followed by a Wednesday match-up against either Butler or UC Riverside.
