ANCHORAGE ? Forward Anthony Brown had 19 points and 14 rebounds and guard Steffan Johnson scored 17 points to lead Pacific to a 71-70 comeback victory over Missouri-Kansas City in Wednesday's late-night action at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
Pacific (2-1) was able to erase a pair of 10-point, second-half deficits thanks to a 34-25 rebounding advantage and timely shooting by Johnson. UMKC (2-2) was led by 26 points and seven rebounds from forward Brent Stephens and 22 points from guard Quinton Day.
Stephens (9-12 FG, 2-2 3FG, 6-8 FT) made two free throws to put the Kangaroos up 62-52 at the 5:15 mark, but the Tigers answered with three charities of their own and got a three-pointer from Johnson to slice it quickly to 62-58. Johnson nailed another trey a couple minutes later to give Pacific its first lead since the early going, 65-64, with 3:06 showing.
A short hook shot by Brown (5-9 FG, 9-11 FT) broke a 67-67 tie with 1:42 remaining, and Johnson (6-13 FG, 3-7 3FG) gave the California school the necessary margin with a pair of charities.
UMKC got a three-pointer from Tim Blackwell with 43 seconds left, and the Kangaroos earned a final possession when they forced a Pacific shot-clock violation with 5.9 ticks on the clock. Day (8-14 FG, 6-11 3FG) took the inbounds pass and tried to drive the length of the court, but UMKC's senior star stepped out of bounds with five-tenths of a second left.
Pacific advances to Friday's 5:30 p.m. AST semifinal against Loyola Marymount, while UMKC falls into the consolation bracket and will face host school Alaska Anchorage at noon Friday.
