Bears win slugfest with Thundering Herd

ANCHORAGE ? California guard Ayinde Ubaka scored 21 points and forward Ryan Anderson added 19 points Thursday as the Golden Bears survived a scrappy Marshall team, 72-70, in the first round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

Cal (2-1), an NCAA Tournament team in 2006, avoided the upset bid thanks to a 42-35 rebounding advantage and the hot shooting of Ubaka, who made 7 of 13 overall and 5 of 6 from three-point range. Marshall (1-2) had a balanced scoring effort, led by 14 points apiece from Travis Aikens and Jean Francois Bro Grebe.

The Golden Bears, who also got 14 points from guard Jerome Randle off the bench, advance to Friday's late semifinal against Hawaii. That game begins at 8 p.m. AST on ESPN2.

Thursday's Thanksgiving matchup featured 14 ties and 25 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points.

Marshall held Cal to just 22 percent shooting in the first half, but the Golden Bears committed only two turnovers in the opening 20 minutes to stay within 30-29.

The Thundering Herd pulled ahead 62-57 on a basket by Markel Humphrey (13 points, team-high 6 rebounds) with 6 minutes to play before Cal answered with a 9-0 run of its own, capped by a 4-point play by Randle.

A pair of Aikens free throws knotted the game for the final time at 67-67 and Marshall had a chance to take the lead, but Humphrey missed a pair of shots and Anderson was fouled on the rebound attempt. The sharp-shooting forward (5-12 FG, 2-6 3FG, 7-7 FT) made both free throws to put Cal up by two, and center DeVon Hardin ? who had just entered the game as a defensive substitute ? drew a charging call on Aikens with 5 seconds left to effectively end Marshall's hopes.

The Thundering Herd fall into Friday's consolation semifinals and will take on Hofstra at 2 p.m. AST.
