UMKC tops Marshall 79-75 for 7th

 

ANCHORAGE ? Senior guard Quinton Day scored a game-high 23 points and junior guard Brett Stephens added 14 as Missouri-Kansas City topped Marshall 79-75 in today's 7th/8th place game at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

 

Day, who shot 6 of 10 from the three point line, set a new tournament record by making 18 three pointers in three tourney games, shooting an impressive 54.5 percent (18-33). The previous record was 16 held by Casey Green of Southwestern Louisiana in 1997.

 

Trailing 10-0 two and a half minutes into the game, UMKC (3-3) would go on a 14-2 run to grab its first lead of the game at 14-12. The Kangaroos outscored Marshall 7-0 the final two minutes of the half to go up 42-34 at the break.

 

The Thundering Herd (1-4) would fall behind by as many as 12 early in the second half before taking a 60-59 lead with 9:37 left on the clock. Junior guard Mark Dorris spearheaded Marshall's comeback by scoring 13 of his team-high 23 points during that span, including nailing three shots from behind the arc.

 

Marshall led just once more in the half (62-61) before UMKC would assume control by surging ahead by nine with 3:34 showing on the clock.

 

UMKC, who outrebounded Marshall 30-26, also received eight points each from Blake Crawford, Dominique Johnson and Tim Blackwell.

 

Joining Dorris in double-figures for the Herd were Tre Whitted (14), Jean Francois Bro Grebe (11) and Markel Humphrey (10).

 

The ?Roos finished the tournament with a 1-2 record while Marshall went 0-3.
