Golden Bears tame Lions for Shootout championship

ANCHORAGE ? Omar Wilkes scored 18 points and tournament Most Outstanding Player Ryan Anderson had another double-double Saturday to lead California to a 78-70 victory over Loyola Marymount for the 2006 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title at Sullivan Arena.

The Golden Bears (5-1) also got 17 points from guard Ayinde Ubaka and 16 points from center DeVon Hardin, who both made the All-Tournament Team.

LMU (5-2) was led by senior guard Brandon Worthy's 18 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Matthew Knight had 14 points and nine rebounds. Both Lions made the all-tourney team as well.

The 29th Shootout title game went back and forth for the first 14 minutes before the Golden Bears took control with a 15-5 spurt to end the first half with a 39-33 advantage.

Cal continued its run to start the second 20 minutes and took its largest lead, 57-39, on a pair of Ubaka free throws at the 12:57 mark. But the Lions never quit behind the tenacious play of Worthy and reserve Adoyah Miller (17 pts, 4-7 3FG, 3-3 FT), cutting the deficit to 59-52 with 6:14 remaining.

The Golden Bears had one last answer for the Lions, however, as Ubaka nailed a three-pointer and dished to Anderson for a layup on the next possession to stretch the lead to 12.

LMU again sliced it to 70-65 with 55 second left, but Wilkes answered with a fastbreak layup seconds later and the Bears wrapped it up from the free throw line.

Anderson finished with 15 points (6-9 FG) and 12 rebounds to become the first freshman since Kansas' Drew Gooden (1999) to win Most Outstanding Player honors.

It was the first Shootout championship for California and the fourth title for a Pacific-10 Conference team (Arizona 1987, UCLA 1990, Washington 2004).
