Skaters down Badgers, 2-1

ANCHORAGE - Charlie Kronschnabel and Justin Bourne scored power play goals and goalie Nathan Lawson had 22 saves to lead the Seawolves to a 2-1 WCHA win over defending national champion Wisconsin at the Sullivan Arena tonight.

UAA improved its overall record to 3-3-2 and 1-3-0 in conference play with the win, its first over Wisconsin at the Sully in nearly five years (Nov 30, 2002). The fifth-ranked Badgers fell to 4-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the WCHA with the loss. The win was also the Seawolves' first in a regular-season contest over Wisconsin since Feb. 2, 2002.

For the second straight night Wisconsin would score the game's initial goal on the power play with a tally from Jake Dowell at the 19:00 mark of the first period. Michael Davies fed a pass to Dowell at the right post that bounced off his skate and past UAA goalie Nathan Lawson.

The Seawolves killed off two of three penalties in the period and outshot the Badgers 9-6.

UAA would take advantage of the only power-play opportunity for either team in a tightly played second when Kronschnabel found the back of the net with a wrister from the high slot, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Seawolves good fortune on the power play continued in the opening minute of the third when Bourne was able to slide the puck past UW goalie Brian Elliott just 33 seconds into the period, giving UAA its first lead of the series at 2-1.

UAA would hold off Wisconsin for the remainder of the game, including killing off two more Badger power-play chances.

Bourne's game winning goal, the fifth of his career and second this season, clinched UAA's 100th all-time WCHA victory.

Lawson evened up his season record in goal with the win (3-3-2) while posting 22 saves.

Elliott made 24 saves for Wisconsin.

UAA went 2-of-4 on the power play, while Wisconsin went 1-of-5.

The Seawolves head back Outside for their next WCHA series next weekend when they travel to Mankato, Minn., to take on Minnesota State.
