FAIRBANKS ? Maria Nilsson led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points and Rebecca Kielpinski pulled down 15 rebounds Friday to keep the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team perfect with a 62-45 win over Fort Lewis at the Glacier Classic here at the Patty Center.
UAA (5-0) also got 10 points from guard Tristan Burnett as it equaled its best start since the 1998-99 season. Fort Lewis (2-4) was led by 12 points and eight rebounds from reserve Allison Rosel.
The Seawolves led from the opening basket, holding the Skyhawks to 29 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers. UAA committed 26 turnovers of its own but won the rebounding battle 40-30.
Fort Lewis, of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, trailed just 13-11 midway through the first half before Kielpinski tossed in a layup and Meghan Vaughan nailed a three-pointer to start a Seawolf mini-run. The lead stretched to 29-20 by halftime and quickly grew to double digits, 34-22, on a Nilsson three-pointer with 17 minutes remaining. The Skyhawks would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Kielpinski, coming off her MVP performance at last week's Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, was held to single-digit scoring for just the third time in 32 career games, finishing with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting. However, the sophomore center snagged a team season-best 15 boards and blocked three shots in 31 minutes.
Junior Jennifer Salazar had seven points and a game-best four assists for UAA, while sophomore guard Limor Pelleg made three steals.
The Seawolves conclude play at the Glacier Classic on Saturday with a 6 p.m. AST matchup against BYU-Hawaii. UAA will then return home to face BYU-Hawaii at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Monday at 7 p.m.
