No. 12 Pioneers blank 'Wolves, 2-0

ANCHORAGE ? Alaska Anchorage was swept for the first time on home ice this season as No. 12 Denver blanked the Seawolves 2-0 behind the stellar goaltending of junior Peter Mannino tonight at Sullivan Arena.

Mannino stopped all 38 shots he faced, including 21 in the second period, as Denver (12-6-2, 8-4-2 WCHA) extended its unbeaten streak in Anchorage to 10 games with the victory.

UAA (8-8-2, 6-8-0 WCHA) outshot the Pioneers 38-23 but were unable to score on seven power-play chances, including a pair of two-man advantage opportunities.

The Pioneers, who went 1-for-6 on the power play, took advantage of a 5-on-3 power-play situation for their first goal of the game when Brian Gifford would connect on a one-timer from the right circle at the 17:28 mark giving DU a 1-0 lead.

UAA was unable to generate many scoring chances in the first 20 minutes as DU held it to just five shot attempts on net.

The Seawolves turned up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the Pioneers 21-6, but Mannino turned back each UAA attempt. The ?Wolves went 0-for-3 on the power play in the second, including missing out on a 5-on-3 chance midway through the period.

UAA would get another two-man advantage to begin the third, but were kept out of the net by DU's penalty killers, who held the Seawolves scoreless on three power-play chances in the opening four minutes of the period.

Tyler Ruegsegger added an empty net goal for the Pioneers with just over one minute remaining in regulation.

Junior Nathan Lawson made 21 saves in net for the Seawolves.

Senior defenseman Chad Anderson led UAA's offensive efforts attempting a team-high nine shots on goal.

UAA will take next week off for the Christmas break before returning to action Dec. 29-30 at home for a pair of non-conference tilts with rival Alaska Fairbanks.
