'Wolves overwhelm Seasiders to equal hottest start

FAIRBANKS ? Rebecca Kielpinski scored 15 points on perfect shooting and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team matched the best start in school history Saturday with a 85-54 win against Brigham Young-Hawaii in the Glacier Classic.

UAA, which got a combined 23 points from seniors Jayci Stone and Mari Callahan, equaled the 1987-88, 1993-94 and 1998-99 Seawolf women's squads with a 6-0 mark to begin the season. BYU-Hawaii (1-4) was led by center LaToya Wily's game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Seasiders, playing their first season of women's basketball, were never in the game as the Seawolves jumped to a 21-4 lead in the first nine minutes. UAA increased it to 35-9 on a three-pointer by Tristan Burnett at the 3:47 mark and took a 45-18 lead into the Patty Center locker room.

The Seawolves pushed their largest lead to 38 points in the second half as they were able to utilize all 15 players on the roster.

Kielpinski, who played only eight minutes in the second half, finished 7-of-7 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. The sophomore from Mandan, N.D., was named the Classic's MVP and was joined on the all-tourney team by Stone, who had 12 points and four rebounds in Saturday's win.

The Seawolves and Seasiders will meet again in Anchorage on Monday. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
