Seawolves repel Seasiders for 7th straight win

ANCHORAGE ? Rebecca Kielpinski had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Alaska Anchorage used an effective full-court press to overcome a feisty Brigham Young-Hawaii squad, 80-60, Monday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Jennifer Salazar and Tristan Burnett scored 11 points apiece for Alaska Anchorage (7-0), which established a record for the most wins to start a season in program history.

The Seasiders (1-5), who are playing their inaugural season of women's basketball, were led by 17 points from guard Lesina Funaki and 11 points and 13 rebounds from center Latoya Wily.

UAA began Monday's game by making six of its first nine shots and seemingly continuing its strong play from Saturday's 85-54 blowout of the Seasiders in Fairbanks. However, the Seawolves went cold after establishing a 29-13 lead, missing their last 12 shots of the first half and going into the locker room up by a 31-23 count.

Funaki nailed a three-pointer to begin the second half, but Salazar sparked a 10-0 Seawolf run with a pair of free throws and a steal that led to a Kielpinski layup. UAA's advantage would not fall back to single digits the rest of the way, stretching to 60-36 with 9:30 to play.

Kielpinski had her usual strong outing, shooting 8 of 14 from the field and swatting three shots, while Salazar showed off her all-around skills with four assists, two steals and three rebounds (all offensive). Senior Jayci Stone was UAA's fourth double-digit scorer with 10 points.

Other key performances for UAA Monday included six assists by sophomore guard Limor Pelleg, four steals by senior guard Meghan Vaughan, and a season-best six rebounds for junior forward Maria Nilsson.

UAA gets it first road test of the season Friday and Saturday when it travels to Seaside, Calif., to take on Cal State-Monterey Bay. Both games begin at 6 p.m. AST.
