SEASIDE, Calif. ? Jayci Stone and Jennifer Salazar tallied 15 points each Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team improved to 9-0 with a 75-68 victory over Cal State-Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Center.
Tenecia Lockard scored 12 points for the Seawolves, who won despite having star center Rebecca Kielpinski held to just six points and six rebounds. CSUMB (2-4) was led by 17 points from reserve Tina Stetson.
The Otters, of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, stayed close to the Seawolves throughout the first half as UAA took just a 40-37 lead into halftime.
The Seawolves seemed to take control after the break with 10-2 run that was capped by a Stone three-pointer. But the Otters would fight back for the second straight night as Stetson nailed a pair of three-pointers around a layup by Megan Okui to draw within 51-48 at the 13-minute mark.
Seawolf guard Tristan Burnett wasted no time extending the lead on UAA's next possession, however, and Lockard exploded for three baskets over the next two minutes make the cushion more comfortable.
Limor Pelleg's three-pointer made it 64-52 with 9:40 remaining, and the Seawolves held on despite not scoring a field goal the rest of the game. The Seawolves' final 11 points came from the free throw line, where they shot 76 percent (19 of 25) as a team.
Lockard's point production was a season-high, while Salazar established a new career-best point total for the second straight evening.
UAA has a 7-day layoff before its next game, a home encounter with Southwest Minnesota State on Dec. 17. That Sunday game begins at 5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
