Comeback at WOU falls short

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 16) - Kemmy Burgess scored 27 points as the Seawolf men's basketball team revisited a familiar theme Thursday, dropping another close road game, 81-76 at Western Oregon.

UAA (16-10, 7-7 GNAC) also got 16 points from James Hartman and 12 from Eric Draper, but was doomed by poor rebounding, losing that battle 31-22. WOU (8-14, 3-10), which snapped a 3-game losing streak, got incredible shooting all night, led by Travis Kuhns' 25 points on 8-of-10 field goals.

The Wolves avenged last month's 88-50 loss to the Seawolves in Anchorage by shooting 54 percent Thursday, including 11 of 20 from three-point range.

UAA came out sluggish and fell behind by as much as 42-26 in the final minute of the first half. Burgess (9-18 FG, 5-10 3FG, 4-4 FT) then sparked a second-half comeback for UAA, and the Seawolves took a 57-55 lead on his three-pointer with 9:48 left.

Things fell apart quickly after that, however, as WOU answered with the next 12 points to retake control. The Seawolves cut the deficit to three several times in the final minutes, and had a chance for a tying possession if they could stop WOU with less than 30 seconds remaining. But Wolves point guard Kevin Tyner (18 points, 7-14 FG, 4-7 3FG) nailed a layup with 20 seconds left to seal it.

UAA point guard Luke Cooper continued his assault on the Seawolves' single-season assist record with 10 more Thursday, bringing him within 25 of the mark (200 by Bryan Anderson, 1992-93) with four games left in the regular season.

Meanwhile, Burgess became the 16th player in the Seawolf history to score 1,000 career points, reaching 1,005 with his total Thursday. It was Burgess' 14th 20-point showing this year.

The loss dropped the Seawolves to 1-7 on the road, with six of those games decided in overtime or the final 30 seconds.

UAA, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, takes on No. 7 Humboldt State on Saturday in Arcata, Calif. (6 p.m. AST).
