Redhawks pull away with late run

SEATTLE (Feb. 16) - Rebecca Kielpinski had 14 points and 16 rebounds, but host Seattle University put on the defensive clamps to keep the UAA women's basketball team winless on the road with a 51-40 loss Thursday at the Connolly Center.

UAA (10-12, 3-10 GNAC) also got 13 points from junior guard Mari Riser, while Seattle (12-10, 7-7) was led by guard Ashley Brown's 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Despite falling behind 8-0 to begin the game, the Seawolves kept battling back until Kielpinski tied it 33-33 on a jumper with 9:05 remaining. A Kielpinski free throw at the 4:30 mark knotted the score for the final time at 37-37, but the Redhawks would answer by showing why they lead the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in three defensive statistical categories.

Ashley Payne began SU's 14-3, game-ending run with a three-pointer, quickly followed by another from Brown. UAA would not score again until a free throw by Kim Brady with just 36 seconds to play.

Kielpinski's double-double was her GNAC-leading ninth this season, and her 16 rebounds tied a career-high.

Senior Kelsey Larsen had seven points, seven rebounds and a career-best five steals.

The Seawolves, now 0-6 away from Anchorage, get another shot at the win column Saturday when they take on Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. (6 p.m. AST).
