Kielpinski tallies triple-double in road win

LACEY, Wash. (Feb. 18) - Rebecca Kielpinski recorded the fourth triple-double in Seawolf history and senior Kelsey Larsen scored a career-high 20 points Saturday to lead the UAA women's basketball team to a 65-58 victory over Saint Martin's at the SMU Pavilion.


UAA (11-12, 4-10 GNAC) got its first road victory of the season and third win in its last five games as Kielpinski had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Beth Layton led SMU (9-15, 5-10) with 15 points, but UAA held the league's leading scorer five points under her average on 5-of-19 shooting.


The Seawolves trailed for most of the first half before Kielpinski (6-7 FG, 5-7 FT) gave them a 33-32 lead with a pair of free throws right before the break.


SMU's Ashley Kitzman scored the first basket of the second half, but the Saints would never hold the lead again after Kielpinski and Larsen combined for the next six points.


The Saints sliced their deficit to one on three occasions, pulling within 57-56 with 3 minutes to play. UAA freshman Kim Brady answered on the next possession, however, nailing her only field-goal attempt of the night, a three-pointer. SMU's Whitney Golob (10 pts, 9 rebounds) scored on the Saints' next trip, but the home team could not crack the scoreboard again, and UA A made 5 of 6 free throws to notch its first road win in seven tries.


Kielpinski became the first UAA freshman and the just the third player in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history to post a triple-double. The Mandan, N.D., native also had two blocks and 10 turnovers. She was one of four Seawolves - joining Larsen, Mari Riser and Limor Pelleg - to play the entire 40 minutes.


The Seawolves clinched the victory with some of their best free-throw shooting of the season, making 25 of 29 for 86.2 percent. SMU managed only 11 trips to the line, hitting nine.


Larsen, a senior playing in her 86th career game, shot 7 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line, grabbing six rebounds and dishing three assists. Riser was huge for UAA as well Saturday, finishing with nine points, eight rebounds and a career-best five steals. Pelleg, a 60 percent free-throw shooter, scored 10 points on 6-of-6 from the line.


The Seawolves conclude the home portion of their schedule next week against playoff contenders Seattle Pacific (Feb. 23, 7 p.m.) and Northwest Nazarene (Feb. 25, 5 p.m.). Larsen will be honored with a short Senior Night ceremony before Saturday's tip.
